I guess I really have to believe that Laparoscopic Surgery is the best option for my ovarian cyst problem.
I thought I can opt for the 6-month treatment of Luprolex but as I did my research, the side effects are out of this world! Countless. In short I got scared and have to weigh the pros and cons between Luprolex and Laparoscopic Surgery.
Luprolex
Pros
- No catheter.
Cons
- All sorts of bone problems/ affectation.
- Different area (left/right, upper/lower body) weakness.
- All sorts of simple problems like dizziness, nausea, etc.
- Possible effects on child in future pregnancies (not proven).
- Teratogenic (has undesirable effects if taken during pregnancy).
- Monthly shot for 6 months, 8k per injection.
- No assurance that the cysts will be completely removed nor decrease in size.
On the other hand,
Laparoscopic Surgery
Pros
- One time operation, one time pain.
- Assurance that the cysts will be removed since the surgeon can see through a monitor any existing cysts/mass.
- Less/ no side effects depending on the outcome of the procedure.
Cons
- Catheterization.
- Leaves 3 tiny (1cm) scars
Obviously, the best option is Laparoscopic Surgery and obviously, I'm afraid of catheterization. But I guess 2-time pain (catheter insertion and catheter removal) is more bearable than all the side effects of Luprolex.
Hi Anne, I too have a 4cm cyst on my right ovary, I just had my first dose of Luprolex last August 11 and so far (take note...so far), I haven't experienced the cons that you mentioned like the dizziness, nausea, weakness, etc. My OBGyn requested me to take Caltrate plus though (to strengthen my bone density). Yes, I have researched these side effects also, but in my case, I chose to proceed with Luprolex first because I want to be more conservative when it comes to opening (or in the case of laparoscopic suregery...making small holes) my uterus. As much as possible, I want to preserve its original state and just undergo surgery when I give birth (in case I need CS), I am still hoping that Luprolex and Cerazette Contraceptive pills will make my cyst smaller. I am 31 and I just found out I have endometriosis because my hubby and I want to be pregnant. My point is, if you are skeptical to take the injections because of the "side effects", well, you have one testimonial to read here that sometimes, they are not really happening, or not all people experience them. (I'll just have to give you a heads up in case I already feel them, hehe) anyway, good luck to both of us, on our endometriosis journey...xoxo...Anjela
ReplyDeleteHi Anjela! Thanks for visiting my blog and for sharing your thoughts and experience here. It's good that you are not experiencing any "side effects" from Luprolex. Anyway, everyone in the family wants me to have lap surgery 'cos that was what the doctor suggested since I'm only 23 and my cysts(left and right) are already candidate for operation. I'd love to hear from you again when you're having your little angel soon! Stay healthy!
DeleteThanks for sharing your post. Its very informative and effective post.

hi, do you have an update on your cyst? Did it get out via lap surgery? I have cyst also on my right ovary, I'm still thinking on what to do.
ReplyDeleteHello! Thanks for dropping by my blog. My operation pushed through last November and so far so good. (All) the cysts were taken out through laparoscopic surgery and I was up and about after a day. A few weeks after my operation, I had three shots of Luprolex- monthly. My last shot was last March. As of now I am still waiting for my period so I can start taking pills. I was advised to continue taking pills until I decide to go through pregnancy. I hope this helps!
DeleteHi,
DeleteHow are you? do you have any follow up on your OB? Does the cyst grows again?
Hi, as of now, no growth yet ;)
DeleteHi, I have optometrists. May I know how big are your cysts?
